Wiimote Mod – Multi-Colored LED A Button
This tutorial is heavily based off the original Easy A button tutorial over at WiimoteMods.com. I suggest you read that tutorial before trying this.
Also this was my first mod, that I’m just now deciding to document.
You will need:
- A Nintendo Wiimote
- A Triwing Screwdriver
- A LED Martini Glass
- Needle Nose Pliers
- Wire Strippers
- Soldering Iron and Solder
- Electrical Tape
WARNING: Certain models of Wiimote are not compatible with this mod. Open your battery casing and check beneath where the batteries are placed. Look for the marking “TP01″ in a small square hole.
Here is a small sample of what this mod will look like when you are finished:
Let’s begin with disassembling the Wiimote. Remove the back plate and batteries. You will see 4 screws, as marked in the image below. Remove these with your tri-wing screwdriver. Then with a butter knife, wedge and pry open the top part of the Wiimote. Careful! If you force this too much you could damage the casing or just drop the buttons inside the Wiimote all over.
Next you will need to disassemble the base of the martini glass. Since there are different styles of these glassware I wont go into great detail. Find a way to bust, cut, or otherwise break open the plastic casing.
You need to remove the following:
- The circle chip with LEDs attached. (Mark where the chip connected to the positive and negative points on the battery)
- The switch, which should be screwed into the base. (Mark where the chip connected to the positive and negative points on the switch)
You should now desolder the LEDs from the chip, remembering how they were connected. One by one you should reconnect the LEDs with about 4 inches of 30 gauge wire per contact. After finishing the reconnection of all 3 LEDs to the chip, create a reconnection between the switch and the chip. Also, give this connection with about 4-5 inches of 30 gauge wire per contact.
The image below will show in great detail the lack of skill and organization I had during this mod. My first flaw was I used waaaaay too much wire.
For the next part we will take the 3 LEDs and place them around the A Button padding. You will need to cut the padding around the actual button so the LEDs can rest as close as possible for maximum glow.
Now for connecting the pieces.
You should route your wiring from the LEDs and the Switch to the LED controller chip, onto the back of the Wiimote.
On the backside of the Wiimote find a flat place to tape down the chip. Attach wires from the positive and negative contacts on the chip. Give them about 3-4 inches.
For the circuit, we will connect the positive end of the LED controller chip you removed from the Martini Glass to the positive contact on the bottom side of the Wiimote. View image from Easy A Button Tutorial.
Now connect the negative end of the LED controller chip to the negative contact on the bottom side of the Wiimote.
These two points on the Wiimote provide 3.2v when the Wii console is powered up and the controller is turned on.
Your circuit should now be complete. I would test to make sure it is working before cleaning things up.
Assuming it is working and you provided yourself with enough wire slack, you should decide where to place the switch.
You will notice the switch makes this thing very difficult with the lack of space to use.
There are not many places you can fit the switch and after you found a suitable place out of the way of gaming “thumb-action” it’s time to make a hole.
Mark the estimated area on the top piece of your Wiimote casing.
Next, using a dremel or other drilling alternative, drill a hole about the same diameter as the switch button.
Finally, after cleaning up your drill hole, use electric tape and tape down all the wires and LEDs.
Put your Wiimote back together and test it out. Most likely you will have color bleeding through the top of the casing. You will need to open the case back up and place electric tape wherever the light shined through.
This concludes the tutorial. More detailed information can be retrieved from the original Easy A Button mod.
Thanks for reading, and good luck!
